Vision Quest

Vision Quest 2023 and the objects and meanings therein I pulled all the stops on the creation of this 18x14 drawing (not a sketch). “Vision Quest supernatural experience in which an individual seeks to interact with a guardian spirit, usually an anthropomorphized animal, to obtain advice or protection. Vision quests were most typically found among the native peoples of North and South America.” Britannica online For purposes of clarity, I am adopted by a Lenape tribe in Western Pennsylvania. Along my life journey I have discovered my totem animal which the fox. The crow has been around me since my youngest memories of living on a farm. Although I have never participated in a vision quest, I have participated in sweat lodge. Entering into the drawing began as the usual energetic scribbling that lays down the “under drawing” and hopefully shows me the way to a journey. In this case it led to Vision quest. The arced circle inspired the quest idea. The young human (woman) entering the arc (portal) is being drawn into the future (next step for humankind). I spent considerable time and sketches deciding on the appropriate image of the young woman. She stands arms outstretched, innocently seeking what is to come. The two orbs in the portal represent the moon, our first off world colony, and Mars, our destination colony, at least for this decade (2030). Earth mother looks down in approval and giving guidance to the young woman. To the right of the earth mother stand the tall stones of the ancients, marking a mystery of our growth and abilities. A crow sits on a knarly dead tree to earth mother’s left, a crow among other meanings is a sign of change, of transition. A fox stands at the base of the tree and looks out of the picture at us. Is it smiling? The fox is a wise guide for those seeking direction. Any thoughts?
