About Joel Keener

Joel Keener I have been drawing as long as I can remember, being totally enchanted by what I see. My art is rather eclectic but from the very beginning of my memories I loved drawing trees. They are so organic, each one as different as the next. They live long, history is recorded in their trunks, branches, and roots. I try to capture that essence in my drawings. Pencils are my favorite medium of expression, there is so much one can do with line. I started drawing with an interesting technique with what I call energy drawing in the early 80s to break from an creative block. Energy drawing is intuitive drawing, scribbling if you will. A lot of pencil lines on smooth bristol and some interesting images began to appear which quickly became recognizable scenes. No more artist block! Not all my work starts with scribbles, of course the portraits and most figures are intentional. It is good to know that style and technique are not the same, not interchangeable but are nonetheless related. I think it is fair to say that my drawing style includes several techniques I use to create a drawing or drawings. Technique talks about skill while style points to overall appearance and character. An artist’s style is like a signature, a stamp. One knows an artist’s work by their style. Style comes with commitment, perseverance, industry, determination, and dare I say, consistency. Yet it is through experimentation, and exploration of materials, media, and imagination that gives birth to one’s own style or styles. I have several styles and many techniques, and I am always exploring new ones. I accept commissions My approach to sculpture is significantly different and must be planned and organized. A concept becomes sketches, sketches become well defined drawings. Armatures and sculpting materials are defined by the size and intricacy of the sculpture. My concepts involve the merging of architectural and organic forms and are influenced by the Art Deco style. Some digital art has escaped and found its way into my work, but I much prefer the touch and intimacy of working with real materials, the feel and sound of a pencil moving across a slightly textured surface, and the feel of clay as it is formed and applied to an armature. It all good. For me the world not so much in color, but in value and form, created in energy, passion, and emotion! I emphasize Composition as being the number one most important element in an artwork. Composition is a pleasing arrangement of lines, shapes, forms, colors. I draw both for pleasing compositions but also to study and understand form.
